If you’re enjoying Milan Design Week until Sunday, the 22nd, there are a few spots around town you can’t skip. Here’s one of them…
Rockwell Group brought the authenticity of American diners to the heart of Milan just in time for Milan Design Week. The architecture giant from the United States teamed up with Surface magazine, and together they designed an amazing pop up restaurant that will be open until the 22nd of April. The Diner, as it is called, is located under the tracks that run into Milan’s central station, and it can be visited for the whole Milan Design Week. If you find yourself arriving at Rockwell’s diner, expect authentic American food, as well as an experience 100% inspired by the famous diners one could find pretty much anywhere in the United States.
With only one shot to replicate the authenticity of a real American diner, Rockwell Group decided to merge four different diner decor styles which can be found across the USA: roadside diner, East Coast luncheonette, Midwest diner, and West Coast diner.
To add to the feeling of that real authentic restaurant design, Rockwell Group’s team divided the space into two areas: one with bright pink tones, and another monochromatic area, with more emphasis on gray hues.
At the center, you will find a long counter bar with roughly 14 meters that allows for more informal meals, where drinks are also served. There, the guests can also wait their turn at a real American diner table, where they will indulge in delicious burgers, shakes and fries.
“Diners are uniquely American and enduring in our cultural iconography. Our goal is to capture the restaurant’s inherently optimistic and democratic spirit that draws people of all backgrounds to create a welcoming, lively, engaging, and fun environment,” explained David Rockwell, founder of the group.
